The Carrigkerry Wrenboys will be out and about in St Stephen's Day | PICTURE: Bridie Murphy
IN YEARS gone by every parish and nearly every townland in West Limerick had its own band of Wrenboys when musicians, dancers and singers travelled within their locality, bringing fun and laughter into homes on St Stephen’s Day.
While that day may be long-gone, the tradition still lives on and Carrigkerry in particular, remains a stronghold for the Wrenboys.
This year, the Carrigkerry Wrenboy Group have decided that rather than travelling to people's homes they will perform outdoors again this year at various locations on St. Stephen’s Day.
Weather permitting, their opening performance will take place in Carrigkerry at 10.45am on St Stephen's Day followed by performances at Knockdown Arms at 11.45am, Kilcolman 12.45pm, Creeves Cross at 1.45pm and Ardagh at 2.45pm.
The final performance of the day will be in the Square, Newcastle West at 3.45pm.
A variety of other events are scheduled to take place in communities across Limerick on Tuesday - from fun runs and walks to road bowling.
