Alert: Met Éireann issues weather warning for Limerick as Storm Gerrit approaches

Multiple weather warnings have been issued as Storm Gerrit approaches

MET Éireann has issued multiple weather warnings with 'intense rainfall' and strong winds likely to batter Limerick and the rest of the country over the coming days.

As Storm Gerrit approaches, the national forecaster has updated the warnings, which were issued for six counties on Christmas Day, to cover the entire country.

The worst of the weather is set to impact west Cork and Kerry with a status orange wind warning set to come into effect at 8pm this St Stephen's Day.

According to Met Éireann, there will be very heavy rain overnight on Tuesday followed by "intense heavy showers" on Wednesday.

A separate, status yellow wind and rain warning has been issued for the rest of the country, including Limerick.

"Heavy rain overnight (Tuesday), followed by heavy showers tomorrow (Wednesday), may lead to localised flooding," states the warning which takes effect from 8pm on St Stephen's Day.

Met Éireann says there will be strong southerly winds overnight on Tuesday veering southwesterly on Wednesday.

This, in conjunction with spring tides, may lead to coastal flooding.

All road users are being urged to exercise caution if travelling while the weather warnings are in place.

Crews from Limerick City and County Council have been placed on standby following the issuing of the warnings.
