A MAN has been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of 21-year-old student Joe Drennan in Limerick last October.

At Limerick District Court this Tuesday morning, Garda Oliver Gee gave evidence of arresting, charging and cautioning Kieran Fogarty, aged 20, of Hyde Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston prior to the court sitting.

Mr Fogarty is charged with three offences - dangerous driving causing death, driving without insurance and driving without a driving licence - at Dublin Road, Limerick on Friday, October 13, 2023.

Garda Gee said Mr Fogarty, who was wearing a light grey tracksuit in court, made no reply to the charges after caution.

Darach McCarthy, solicitor for Mr Fogarty, asked Judge Carol Anne Coolican to grant legal aid due to the "seriousness of the matter".

Judge Coolican granted the application before putting the matter back to later in the day for a bail application, on behalf of Mr Fogarty, to be made by Mr McCarthy.

Members of Mr Drennan's family were in court for the short procedural matter.

The late Mr Drennan, who was originally from Mountrath in County Laois, was an award-winning fourth year journalism student in University of Limerick and editor-in-chief of the Limerick Voice publication.
