A PROPERTY development firm has purchased an eight-and-a-half acre site next to Croom Hospital for €260,000.
Brienross Property Ltd’s acquisition of the land was green-lit at this month’s full council meeting.
When it comes to the sale of council-owned land, it is the role of councillors to approve or reject these.
In a briefing note to council members, Jayne Leahy, the council’s head of property management wrote: “The subject site is low lying, irregular in shape and primarily under grass.
"The site is bounded by timber post and rail fencing to the west and north, by a stream to the east and by hedgerows to the south. Access to the site is provided off the link road between the Croom Distributor Road and Colaiste Chiarain.”
It’s not clear what Brienross Property Ltd has in mind for the site, with council saying the sale is not happening subject to planning.
“The council has no requirement for the land,” Ms Leahy added.
The HSE had expressed an interest in buying a separate 45 metre wide piece of land (1.1 hectare) on a neighbouring site in order to support any extension plans for Croom Hospital.

Council is seeking to calculate a price for this patch of land and has sought the advice of the Valuation Office Ireland.
Separately this month, councillors approved the sale of a site within the Kilmallock Business Park, measuring 0.80 acres for €70,000. This land will be used for a storage shed.
A derelict property in Smith O’Brien Avenue in Kileely, Limerick city is also to be sold for €131,000.
