Limerick schools' fundraiser supports flood victims in Brazil

Joana Ludwig Araujo will bring the funds back to Brazil

A LIMERICK city school joined forces with people from across the community to raise funds for those affected by flooding in southern Brazil.

People from Our Lady of Lourdes school, the ABC club, Fairtrade group and other community activists joined together to raise €1,000 for the flood victims.

The Brazil tragedy was brought home to the community by Joana Ludwig Araujo, who is a teacher from Port Alegre, she is one of 30 teachers from Brazil doing a course in Mary Immaculate College.

The flooding from the Guaiba River in Port Alegre has left more than a million people completely blocked off, with the airport, bus station and main roads blocked.

The school staff ran a coffee morning and raffle while pupils ran a colours day. The local Sit and Sip café ran a raffle with sponsored prizes.

A notice was also put into the parish newsletter and some generous donations were contributed.

Joana will bring the money back to Brazil this month when she goes back.
