Damage was caused to the Maple Ballroom in Kilfinane

A HISTORIC building, which was opened in Kilfinane in 1953, was damaged in a fire yesterday afternoon (Thursday, July 25, 2024).

The Maple Ballroom as it was known, on Barrack Street, on the road out of Kilfinane towards Glenroe and Mitchelstown, has been out of use for many years.

Emergency services received the distress call at 4.36pm yesterday (July 25, 2024). Two units from Kilmallock Fire Brigade attended the scene, as well as one from Charleville.

There was smoke damage to the building and fire fighters were on the scene until 9.47pm.

A garda spokesperson told Limerick Live: "Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fire at a property in Kilfinane, Co Limerick.

"No injuries have been reported at this time."

Gardaí also confirmed to Limerick Live that no criminal offence or potential garda investigation is currently linked with the fire.

Built by Willie McAuliffe, in its prime, the venue would have hosted many of the best known show bands of the time and it was one of the most popular dance halls in the south of the country.

Plays, magic acts and comedy were all also performed there.

Many of those who will still remember the Maple Ballroom would have cycled or walked to any event or dance on there.
