ALERT: Motorists caught speeding in Limerick during first five hours of Slow Down Day

A motorist in Limerick was among those caught speeding during the first five hours of National Slow Down Day, gardai have revealed.

A number of notable detections have been highlighted as part of the 24-hour road safety initiative which began at 7am this Monday.

There is a large garda presence on roads in Limerick and across the country and additional GoSafe vans have also been deployed.

In an update, a garda spokesperson said a total of 72 vehicles had been caught speeding across the country between 7am and 12 midday. All of those detections were made by GoSafe vans and the numbers are expected to rise once the garda detections have been collated.

One detection in Limerick, which has been highlighted, relates to a vehicle which was caught travelling at 115kph in a 100kph on the N18 approaching the Limerick Tunnel.

Other detections made over the five hours include a vehicle travelling at 106kph in a 80kph Zone on the R772 at Clavass,  Enniscorthy, Co Wexford; a vehicle travelling at 114kph in a 100kph Zone on the N25 at Lemybrien,  Waterford and a vehicle travelling at 111kph in a 100kph zone on the N3 at Lisgrea, Virginia County Cavan.

An Garda Síochána has thanked those drivers who were driving within the speed limit during the first few hours of National Slow Down Day.

"We continue to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads," said a spokesperson.
