Several motorists were prosecuted before Kilmallock Court, arising from detections made by GoSafe vans
SANTA Claus had barely departed Limerick last Christmas morning when a motorist was caught speeding on a busy road in the city, a court has heard.
In evidence, the operator of a GoSafe speed van told Kilmallock Court he was on duty at Ballysimon Road, Limerick at 9.48am on December 25, 2023 when he detected a vehicle which was travelling at 62km/h in a 50km/h zone.
Judge Patricia Harney was told the registered owner of the car, who has no previous convictions, had not paid the fine and was not present in court despite having been summoned.
The judge, having formally recorded a conviction, imposed a €320 fine, giving the woman four months to pay.

Separately, another prosecution which was before the court on the same day related to a speeding offence which was detected on February 14 this year - Valentine's Day!
In that case, evidence was heard that the offending vehicle was clocked travelling at 68km/h in a 50km/h zone at Dock Road, Limerick at 7.03am.
The driver, who was present in court, did not not offer any explanation but asked to be given a chance "to fix it". He was fined €200.
While not a matter for the court, penalty points will also be applied to the licences of those convicted of speeding offences arising from GoSafe detections.
