A popular takeaway in a Limerick village was ordered to shut down for a number of days last month after several food health concerns were flagged during a HSE inspection.

CoCo Asian and Chinese takeaway, located on Main Street in Ballingarry, was served with a closure order under EU food regulations.

Poor cooling and storage practices along with damaged and unclean equipment were some of the reasons cited by a HSE officer as the reasons for the immediate closure.

Poor hygiene and food exposed to potential contamination were also noted in the inspector's report. The grille of the electrical insect control unit was found covered with flies, and the inspection report found that there was "no evidence to indicate when bulbs in electrical insect control unit were last changed".

A closure order is served where it is deemed that there is or there is likely to be a "grave and immediate danger to public health at or in the premises; or where an improvement order is not complied with".

In the case of CoCo Asian and Chinese takeaway, the closure order was lifted on October 25 after the matters of concern were rectified.

Separately, an improvement order was also served on the proprietors of Turkmen Grill, at Parnell Street in the city on October 10.

The improvement, which was lifted on November 7,  cited unsafe and unclean working conditions, and observed hair in food, out-of-date products and re-used kitchen gloves.
