'World-class' swimming pool to reopen soon in Limerick

Askeaton Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre has been closed to the public since 2023

A SWIMMING pool that was closed to the public over two years ago to allow for vital works at the facility to take place is set to reopen soon.

A total of €2,476,589.98 has been spent on the pool since 2023.

Minister of State Niall Collins said this Easter Monday that he has been informed that an operator for the Askeaton swimming pool to be appointed very soon. He said he is "confident that the pool will reopen its doors soon".

Mr Collins said the swimming pool, which received significant sports capital grant funding under the former Minister of State for Sport, Thomas Byrne, has undergone extensive refurbishment works.

"It will be a hugely important world-class amenity for the community upon its reopening.

"The Askeaton swimming pool was closed in March 2023 to facilitate refurbishment works to make it more energy efficient and to protect it against further flood damage.

"While these works are important, its closure has caused a great deal of uncertainty for the local community. The length of its closure has especially been a cause of great concern to the local swimming club and other users of the leisure complex," said Mr Collins, in a statement.

He continued: "I am glad to say I have been informed that an operator is soon to be formally appointed to manage the swimming pool. The processes necessary to re-open the pool, such as the hiring of staff by the operator, are underway.

"This is a very positive update and I look forward to the re-opening of the swimming pool as a world-class amenity for our local community under the new operator in the weeks ahead."
