New facility for Limerick athletics club

Councillors expected to approve land sale

New facility for Limerick athletics club

The land, where Dooneen Athletics Club is expected to build

PLANS for a community athletics facility in Mungret look set to take a huge step forward.

It comes as members of the council will next month be asked to approve plans to sell a five-acre patch of land to Dooneen Athletics Club.

This will pave the way for a full size 300m track and indoor sports facility for the club, which serves the communities of Dooradoyle, Mungret, Raheen and its surrounds.

The proposed sale was welcomed by Fine Gael councillor Daniel Butler, who represents the area on the local authority.
He said the vision for a new sports facility is eight years in the making.

“I was proud to support Dooneen Athletics back then when the land was first secured, and I’m equally proud to support them again as they move forward to formally purchase and develop the site,” said Cllr Butler.

The facility, he says, will serve not just the immediate area, but also the broader region.

It will offer much-needed resources for athletes and community engagement.

“It’s a project that’s been years in the making, and I’m delighted to see it reach this next milestone,” he added.

The approval of the sale is expected to go through at next month’s full council meeting.

After this, Cllr Butler says the onus is on councillors and the public to ensure the facility is a success.

“The responsibility is on all of us – as a community – to ensure its success and long-term benefit. Dooneen Athletics Club will need our support to see this through to completion so when the time comes let's get behind them,” the councillor added.

Members will be asked to propose the sale of land in the townland of Caheranardrish to the athletics club for €63,120.

The sale of public tracts of land is one of the areas where councillors hold the sole power.
