PRINCIPAL Deirdre Bourke of Limerick Community Special School is lacing up her running shoes for a great cause.

This Sunday May 4, she'll be tackling her first half marathon as part of  the Regeneron Great Limerick Run to raise funds for the school's sensory equipment.

Speaking about the upcoming challenge she said "As a principal and an advocate for holistic education, I want to lead by example and work on my fitness and wellbeing as a school leader. This half marathon is not just about me; it's about the incredible students, teachers, and community that make our school so special."

Limerick Community Special School established under the patronage of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, opened in September 2024 and supports students with moderate intellectual disabilities and complex needs. Starting with 30 students, the school is set to grow by 60% this coming September, expanding to 48 students to meet increasing local demand.

By participating in the half marathon, Deirdre aims to raise vital funds for Limerick Community Special School's programmes and services including sensory equipment which will help enhance the learning environment and support the unique developmental needs of the students. "Every step counts, and every donation will make a tangible difference in the lives of our students” she said.

Deirdre is calling on friends, families, and local residents to rally behind this important cause. "Our school has been welcomed with open arms by the community, and I’m excited to give something back by taking part in this race," she added.
