THE TELEVISION shows Glenroe and Squid Game couldn’t be further apart.

One was a slice of rural Irish life on RTÉ, the other a South Korean dystopian survival thriller on Netflix. However, they will somehow combine when Glenroe GAA Club hosts a Quid Game event in Mitchelstown Leisure Centre on Friday, June 6.

It will feature a variety of games that test your physical and mental abilities and challenge skills and strategy.

All proceeds will go towards the erecting of a gym and spectator stand at Glenroe GAA grounds, said Veronica Farrell, community stalwart and one of the organisers.

“Forty five contestants will take part in the event with €10,000 in prize money on the night with the winning contestant’s nominated charity being the main beneficiary.

“Each contestant will be fundraising over the coming weeks, and all donations will be greatly received to help them reach their targets,” said Veronica.

The Quid Game night was launched on Friday night with contestants getting a sneak preview of the event. It was MC-ed by TV and radio presenter Valerie Wheeler.

There was an opportunity for all to meet the contestants and to get a sneak peek of what’s going to happen on June 6.

Contestants were put into teams of four determined by the colour blindfolds they were wearing. The winning teams from heat 1 and heat 2 battled it out in the semi-final.

The winning team then had to battle it out as individuals in the final. Sean Desmond from Watergrasshill GAA won the Golden Ticket on the night guaranteeing him a place in round 3 of 6 in the Quid Game.

The 45 contestants are drawn from home and abroad with Veronica saying that three participants are in far away shores.

“Lorna McCarthy and Ashley Carroll (Hayes), two Glenroe locals turned Ozzie girls, are based in Perth, Australia. They clocked up the kilometres last weekend. Lorna took on an 80km ultra marathon while Ashley completed a 100km cycle.

“Both girls are organising a community event for this weekend and are looking to the Irish community and beyond in Perth for support. Their chosen charity is the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust,” said Veronica.

Michael John Farrell, based in Ras Al Khamiah (RAK) in United Arab Emirates, is also putting his pedals to the mettle.

“In preparation for the event, he will be completing a 500km cycle over the month of May, aiming to receive sponsorship to reach the fundraising target.

“All donations €15 and above will be entered into a draw for tickets to the sold-out Kingfishr show in 3Arena in Dublin. Michael John’s chosen charity is RakRopairi GAA, his home away from home GAA club,” said Veronica.

Tickets for the event are now on sale for Quid Game and can be purchased from all committee members or contact 087 6280417 or 087 7718199 for more information. For more information on upcoming events please see Glenroe GAA Facebook page.
