PUNTERS at Limerick Racecourse hope the horses they have backed run like lighting but it was the course that was struck by lightning this week!

During the thundery conditions on Tuesday afternoon, lightning struck the picturesque venue in Greenmount Park. It hit wires and trees were set on fire. Limerick Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene.

Thankfully, there were no injuries caused to any staff or damage to buildings.

Michael Lynch, chief executive of Limerick Racecourse, said it was very minor.

“Two units of the fire brigade dealt with it. They were gone in 20 / 30 minutes,” said Mr Lynch, who is busy preparing for the first of the Summer Twilight Racing meetings this Thursday night.

The first race is off at 5.05pm with seven National Hunt races on the card.

Music by The Busker Paul Fahy from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in the Munster Suite.
