A NEW total of €1.4 million has been awarded to Limerick community projects, after an additional €605,378 in funding under the Community Recognition Fund 2024 has been welcomed by Limerick City and County Council.
The amount has been made available to support 22 projects across Limerick that enhance community facilities and infrastructure, aimed at supporting communities that in particular have hosted significant numbers of Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection and International Protection Applicants arriving from Ukraine and other countries.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, welcomed the funding announcement, saying: “This funding is a powerful recognition of the generosity and openness shown by communities across Limerick. I want to thank Minister Calleary and his Department for this support, and most importantly, the people of Limerick who have opened their hearts and homes to those seeking safety and a new start.”

Príomh Comhairleoir, Cllr Dan McSweeney, added: “The Community Recognition Fund is about rewarding communities that have stepped up in times of need. I have seen first-hand locally in Clarina/Ballybrown the great work that has been carried out by many local groups and sporting organisations in recent years. Overall Limerick has shown incredible solidarity, and this funding will help us build on that spirit by improving facilities that everyone can enjoy.”
Dr. Pat Daly, Director General of Limerick City and County Council, described the investment as “a worthy recognition of the resilience and inclusivity of our communities.”
Among the Limerick Projects Receiving Funding from the Community Recognition Fund 2024 is the installation of modular building at Ballybrown Community Centre, the installation of a community playground at St. Patrick's Boys School, the installation of astro turf/MUGA and upgrade of fencing and walkway, a sensory playspace at St. John's Girl's & Infant Boy's School, the upgrade and installation of box-up facility at Mungret Park Soccer Pitch, upgrading the entire flooring infrastructure in DÓCHAS on Parnell Street, the installation of floodlighting in Kennedy Park Pitch, and a basketball court for Limerick Sports Partnership on the Shelbourne Road.
