PICTURES: 'The years flew,' said Canon Liam at the Limerick celebration of 60th anniversary of his ordination

Relatives, friends, former parishioners and residents attended special event in St Anthony's Nursing Home in Pallasgreen

CANON Liam McNamara didn’t want any fuss on the 60th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood but his relations, friend Eileen O'Riordan, and St Anthony’s Nursing Home staff ensured the day was celebrated in style.

The hale and hearty 86-year-old celebrated Mass before one and all enjoyed afternoon tea in the care facility in Pallasgreen.

Canon McNamara, a native of Drom & Inch parish in County Tipperary, spent most of his priestly life in County Limerick. They included the parishes of Doon, Pallasgreen, Oola and Ballybricken where he came to know the O’Riordan family and Dolores, who became a global musical superstar with The Cranberries.

“She was a teenager when I came to Ballybricken. I knew her all those years. I often think of her. It was very sad. I had the privilege of officiating at her marriage and, sadly, at her funeral.

“Eileen (Dolores’ mother) is a wonderful lady. She was here last night to visit me. They are a great family, very close,” said Canon McNamara.

The esteem Eileen and the O’Riordans hold the Canon in is shared by countless former parishioners.

“I was very lucky with the parishes I was in - the people were all very nice,” said Canon McNamara.

As he reflects on the remarkable achievement of his diamond jubilee, the Canon said the years flew by and he would do it all again.

“I have no regrets. I was happy all the time. I was lucky where I was hosted - all the parishes were outstanding,” he said.

Sean Fennessy, director of nursing at St Anthony's Nursing Home, described it as a “momentous occasion”.

“We were delighted to help Canon McNamara celebrate with his family, good friends, neighbours and fellow residents. A big thank you to his loyal and faithful friend, Eileen, for helping with the planning of today's lovely events.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Canon Liam for all he does here for the residents and staff of the nursing home. We are so lucky to have him in our lives, not just to say Mass but because he is a great friend to all, so kind, caring and patient. Enjoy the celebrations Canon Liam. We look forward to the next 10 years,” said Mr Fennessy.
