RESIDENTS have welcomed a proposed redesign of the former home of Bard of Thomond, Michael Hogan.

The former Whelan’s Bar at New Street in Thomondgate is known as the place where the famous poet and author resided.

There were fears earlier in the year from locals after councillors passed plans to demolish the building in favour of six new apartments.

However, following meetings between residents, council bosses, and local TD Maurice Quinlivan, locals have seen a design which will see the structure retain its unique whitewashed exterior appearance.

A council spokesperson confirmed that it hopes to put out a tender to appoint a contractor for the works by the end of next month.

Pat Murphy, a spokesperson for the Thomondgate Residents Association, says what is proposed for the building is “a good compromise”.

And a commemorative plaque from Limerick Civic Trust recognising it was the home of poet Mr Hogan will retain pride of place.

“The white building is what the area is associated with. It’s what all remember. It might not be the original, but it will look similar and have the cottage feel,” he said.

In terms of the demolition of the complex, council has repeatedly stated that it will be “uneconomical and unsafe” to carry out a full refurbishment of the original building.

“They are trying to retain as much of the old look of the place that they can. It’s not going to change completely, which we are happy with,” Mr Murphy added.

The application for the housing will go to Government this week.
