The Askeaton Swimming Club building is in process of being sold
ASKEATON Swimming Club has said it is “more than willing” to meet Limerick Council over the sale of its boat house beside the River Deel.
As reported in the Limerick Leader, the voluntary group is in the process of selling the building, which was once home to Southern Chemicals.
The club says the complex is no longer part of its future.
But concern has been expressed because Askeaton Swimming Club received almost €50,000 of councillors’ own devolved funding to improve the facility in recent years.
At this month’s Adare-Rathkeale district meeting, Cllr Adam Teskey reflected concerns by former member Kevin Sheahan over this.
Cllr Teskey told the council he feels there is a “moral duty” on the club to pay back the sum.

“There has to be a marker laid down. We have a responsibility as custodians of the tax payers’ money here,” he said.
In future, he wants to see an option put in place which will allow council to “claw back” the money in similar circumstances.
His Fine Gael colleague, Cllr Stephen Keary backed this up.
However, council official Karen Butler said she did not think it would be appropriate to pursue this.
“It would call into question every other project we would have given money to.
“I don’t think it’s a road we should be going down, and I don’t think the law allows it either,” she said.
A spokesperson said the club has not received any direct communication from councillors.
It said it is “fully committed” to adhering to any rules and conditions around public funding.
“We are more than willing to meet with Limerick City and County Council and ensure full compliance,” the spokesperson added in a statement to the Leader.
