LIMERICK gardai swooped on a number of properties in the Garryowen area this Wednesday morning.

A garda spokesperson said they rolled out a targeted operation tackling the dangerous use of scramblers and e-scooters.

“After multiple properties were searched, a haul of scramblers and e-scooters were seized under the Road Traffic Act,” said the garda spokesperson.

A photograph, supplied by gardai, shows scramblers, e-scooters and a quad bike on the back of a flatbed truck.

“Gardaí in Limerick remain committed to ensuring safer communities and promoting responsible road use,” said the garda spokesperson.

The operation was conducted by gardaí from Henry Street Community Policing.

Following a similar major seizure in 2023, Superintendent Andrew Lacey, of Henry Street garda station, said: “Through our various interactions in JPCs and local community meetings we received a clear message that this behaviour is causing fear, intimidation and distress across the city.”

Supt Lacey added: “We are acutely aware of the problem ourselves and can correlate the use of scramblers and e-scooters to criminal activities with a number of detections in the sale and supply of drugs in recent months.

“With the new powers in place, we plan to continue with these operations if those responsible continue to break the law, cause harm to communities or have a detrimental effect on business and traders in the city centre."
