A PLAQUE unveiled on Sunday at the bus stop in Castletroy where UL student  Joe Drennan was tragically killed captures the very essence of the young man.

A photo of Joe shows him wearing a stylish polo neck, flashing his beaming, infectious smile, while his gorgeous long curls frame his face perfectly.

The inscription reads: “In loving memory of Joe Drennan, forever 21 years young. A beloved son, brother, uncle, gifted journalist and cherished friend tragically taken from us on October 13, 2023. Slán Abhaile. May you rest in peace on your journey home.”

The plaque was unveiled by Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Catherine Slattery. She welcomed Joe’s parents Marguerite and Tim Drennan, siblings, extended family, friends and gardai from Limerick Divisional Roads Policing Unit, who had stopped traffic on the busy road for the touching ceremony.

“Joe was an inspirational young man, talented and creative. He was loved and admired by all who knew him.

“We remember Joe today with his infectious smile that shone bright and will shine forever from his memorial plaque. We think of Joe in happier times as I unveil his memorial plaque,” said Cllr Slattery.

Warm applause greeted Cllr Slattery officially unveiling the plaque inset into the stone wall.

Joe’s sister, Sarah, read out a piece written by her and brother, Richard, on behalf of the Drennan family.

“Today means so much to our family as we unveil this plaque in memory of my brother Joe, who was taken from us far too soon at just 21,” said Sarah.

She said they are deeply grateful to Limerick City Council, Cllr Martin Ryan for starting it, and especially to Councillor Catherine Slattery, whose dedication went far beyond fundraising.

“She helped bring this plaque from an idea to reality, oversaw its installation, and made today’s unveiling possible. We would also like to thank staff of UL for attending today, as Joe was a proud student there; An Garda Síochána, and, in particular, chief investigating officer, Inspector Padraigh Sutton, for their work and for arranging the road closure.

“We also thank the staff of La Cucina for attending today, a place Joe loved working and where he made many friends,” said Sarah.

“Every person, business, and community member who contributed” was also thanked.

“Your kindness has given us a lasting tribute to Joe and a symbol of the love and support that has surrounded us since his passing. Joe was loved by everyone who knew him, and we will carry his memory in our hearts forever. Thank you,” said Sarah.
