‘Thinking of you all at this devastating time’: Deep sadness at death of Limerick GAA and rugby sports stars

The late Sean Flanagan will be laid to rest following requiem Mass on Monday

THE LATE Sean Flanagan of Knocklong is being remembered as “an absolute gentleman to his very core” following his sudden passing on Thursday.

An air ambulance and ambulances responded after he took ill but despite the best efforts of paramedics, Mr Flanagan sadly passed away.

His grieving family have asked for donations in lieu of flowers to go to the Irish Heart Foundation in memory of Mr Flanagan.

He was the dearly beloved husband of Rosemary (née Fitzgerald) and loving father of Fionn, Aine and Hugh, son of heartbroken parents Brendan and Catherine (Kitty), and loving brother of Emer, Brendan, Oliver and Catherine.

Son, Limerick senior hurler and U20 county star Hugh Flanagan didn’t play for Garryspillane in a club match on Thursday evening. Another son, Fionn is a talented rugby player with Bruff RFC who has represented Ireland and Munster at U18 level.

Mr Flanagan is also sadly missed by his mother-in-law Maureen, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law,nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins, extended family. neighbours and many friends.

Countless tributes have been paid on rip.ie.

“An absolute gentleman to his very core. We will miss Sean greatly. His humour brightened many's the difficult day. Rest in peace friend,” wrote one.

Former mayor and councillor, Gerald Mitchell said: “My deepest condolences to all the family relations and friends. May Sean's gentle soul rest in eternal peace.”

A condolence from the board of management, staff and pupils of Knocklong NS reads: “Our heartfelt sympathy to you all on the untimely passing of your beloved husband / dad Seán. Thinking of you all at this devastating time. May Seán rest in eternal peace.

“Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a Anam.”

A post on the Garryspillane GAA Facebook page says: “Everyone involved with The Bouncers offer our sincere condolences to Rosemary, Fionn, Aine and Hugh on the passing of Sean. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Bruff RFC also took to social media to pay their respects.

“From everyone at Bruff RFC, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to our senior player Fionn, Hugh who played with us through underage, and the rest of the Flanagan family on the passing of Sean. May he rest in peace.”

Knocklong Development Association have also extended their sympathies.

Funeral arrangements have been announced with Mr Flanagan reposing at his home in Knocklong this Sunday evening, August 31, from 4pm to 7pm.

Reception into St Joseph's Church, Knocklong on Monday for Requiem Mass at 11.30am. followed by burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

May he rest in peace.
