A YOUNG man who has sadly passed away aged only 23 has been remembered for his "infectious personality and quick wit".

Luke Grimes, a hugely well-known and popular figure in Limerick's sporting circles, sadly died on Wednesday evening.

A well-known and passionate soccer and GAA supporter, Luke followed Limerick FC and latterly Treaty United on the road.

He could also be seen cheering on St Patrick's GAA and his beloved Pike Rovers from the sidelines.

A lifelong and devoted follower of English soccer side Manchester United, in 2016, he was approached by the managers of the Limerick District League side competing in the FAI Oscar Traynor Trophy to take the reigns for a match.

Born with a rare form of dwarfism, football-mad Luke never let that stand in the way of his enjoying life.

Pike Rovers said the club heard the news of Luke's passing with great sadness.

"Everyone associated with Pike Rovers and Limerick Soccer Community had come to know and love Luke and his infectious personality and quick wit. He had been a player, a manager, and above all an incredible supporter of Pike Rovers," the club wrote in a statement posted to Facebook.

St. Patrick’s GAA Club said they were deeply saddened and devastated to learn of Luke Grimes, in the wake of the team's draw with rivals Claughaun.

"The joy and energy of sport were truly and heartbreakingly put into perspective as the news of Luke’s passing reached us. Luke was a passionate supporter of St. Patrick’s GAA. He followed the Mullins boys in particular with great pride and enthusiasm, always bringing joy and spirit to the sidelines. In recent times, he especially enjoyed cheering on his nephew, Harry, with that same infectious pride", they added.

The club said that despite facing health challenges throughout his life, Luke taught the club how to embrace each moment and make the most of what we have.

"His bravery, love of sport and GAA, laughter, and joy for life will be fondly remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. The infectious smile, humour and positive energy that Luke shone so brightly", added the city club.

Tributes have poured into Luke on social media.

Boxer Lee Reeves wrote: "God grant you the best bed in heaven Luke you were such a beautiful soul."

"Rest easy to a true Limerick legend," another added.

Long-time pal and Limerick senior footballer Kyle Mullins described him as a "warrior, one of a kind and an inspiration".

Luke's funeral details have yet to be announced.
