COUNCIL is to investigate opening a garden to provide a peaceful area where families impacted by tragedy can find a space to remember loved ones.
Members of Limerick’s metropolitan district have thrown their support behind the idea of a ‘butterfly garden’, possibly within Mungret Park.
It would provide an area for mothers and families who have been impacted by miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal, infant and young baby loss.

The initiative for the garden is led by five local bereaved mothers who came together over the summer.
They are: Aine Healy Collins from Ballingarry, Hattie Kearney, who lives in Limerick, but hails from Arizona, Louise Canty, based in Clonlara, Shannon Brady from Newcstle West and Laura Gill of Nenagh.
They approached metropolitan district leader, Cllr Daniel Butler in order to gain support for opening the garden. The backing arrived at this month’s metropolitan meeting, with the council set to identify land for a garden.
Cllr Butler said: “There are many families affected in this way. I know there are butterfly gardens in other parts of the country as well. This group has done a lot of research on what has been done elsewhere, and a space has been identified for quiet reflection. At times where we all have busy lives, I think it will be good for everyone.”
Councillor Butler was supported by his Fine Gael colleague Olivia O’Sullivan and Kieran O’Hanlon, Fianna Fail.
Aine said: “This project is about celebrating each little life - reminding parents of the love, not just the loss. Parents are reminded of their loss every day and they need a special place to celebrate their little ones - to remember the love and the life, however brief it was. The Butterfly Garden embraces this by providing a space where parents can openly talk about their babies and find support among others who understand. This garden celebrates and remembers every little life.”
