Cllr Elisa O’Donovan says bike park in Parnell Street is rarely used
COUNCIL is to investigate removing a bike park in the city centre, which has been described as being “desolate and empty”.
At this month’s metropolitan district meeting, Social Democrats councillor Elisa O’Donovan called for the removal of the steel bars which allow parking of bikes at Parnell Street.
She said: “There is endless steel bicycle parking. It takes away from the whole area of Parnell Street. It looks desolate and empty to have these stainless steel structures which have never been used to as bicycle parking.”

Cllr O’Donovan added: “I think it’s something we can do to make that area look a bit nicer”.
Council director of service Kieran Lehane said it’s something the authority will look at.
“If there is a surplus of it, we will take it away,” he said.
Separately, Cllr O’Donovan sought an update on the plans for the bike sharing scheme following Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien’s announcement they will be replaced later this year.
Senior executive engineer John O’Leary said the National Transport Authority (NTA) is at the stage of acquiring an operator for the bike scheme.
It’s intended this will be in place soon, with the new bike scheme operational by the summer of 2026.
He added council will liaise with both the NTA and whichever firm secures the right to operate the scheme.
