From stigma to strength: Hollywood-style sign marks reflections of Limerick community

A LITTLE touch of Hollywood came to Limerick to celebrate the launch of a new documentary as the iconic ‘Moyross’ sign was unveiled once more. It turns the camera back on the community a decade after a landmark play first challenged the area's portrayal.

The documentary features residents watching footage of themselves ten years on. Where there were once negative headlines, the documentary examines positive change in Moyross, the legacy of media intrusion, and the ongoing fight for access and representation embodied in the unfinished promise of University Avenue.

The proposed Avenue was meant to give Moyross children a straight path from Corpus Christi Primary School, to secondary school, and on to third level. It promised to inspire young people to pursue third-level education but the scheme was blocked by some elected representatives and neighbouring estates.

Co-facilitator of the documentary, Grace Dyas said: “When I first came to Limerick, hypocrites in Dublin told me I’d need a bulletproof vest to go to Moyross. The reality I found was completely different... Fame is synonymous with Hollywood, so the idea of a Hollywood sign for Moyross was born as a way of asking if Moyross could also be famous for its talent.”
