Limerick Greenway was celebrated for its positive impact on community wellbeing, heritage preservation, and inclusive access.

The 40km off-road trail, developed by Limerick City and County Council (LCCC), repurposes the former Limerick - Tralee railway line, linking Rathkeale, Ardagh, Newcastle West, Barnagh, Templeglantine, and Abbeyfeale.

Since its official opening in 2021, the Greenway has welcomed over 680,000 users, boosted local businesses, and fostered healthier lifestyles. It features age-friendly and accessible infrastructure, restored heritage sites, and innovative amenities such as U-Turn audio installations with Irish Sign Language interpretation.

Deputising for the Mayor of Limerick at the ceremony, Cllr. Micheal Collins said, “Limerick Greenway is a fantastic asset for our district and for County Limerick. It has brought new life to our towns and villages, supported local businesses, and created a space where people of all ages can enjoy the outdoors.”

Eileen Coleman, Senior Executive Officer at Limerick City and County Council added,  “Receiving this award is a testament to the collaborative team effort behind Limerick Greenway. From planning and design to community engagement and delivery, every step was guided by a commitment to excellence and sustainability.”

Part of the EuroVelo 1 network, Limerick Greenway aligns with national and EU goals for climate action and rural development. For more, visit www.limerick.ie/greenway.
