THE GOVERNMENT has held its second forum to examine how the role of directly-elected mayor in Limerick is going on its inaugural outing.

Limerick remains the only city in Ireland to have an executive mayor, John Moran, and due to this, regular check-ins are being held with bosses at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, which brought in the legislation for the role.

The latest forum in the Custom House, Dublin -the offices where the department is based - was attended by Mayor Moran and local TD and Minister of State Kieran O’Donnell among others. It was chaired by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne.

The department did not give specific information about what took place at this summit.

But the forum is there to make recommendations to Mr Browne over issues arising from the establishment of the office of

Mayor of Limerick, or the operation of the legislation which underpins the role.

The group is also there to decide whether more powers should be given to Mayor Moran.

Mayor Moran said: “I am privileged as the Mayor of Limerick to attend the consultative forum alongside national and regional leaders. The agenda reflects the critical priorities for Limerick – housing, innovations, sustainable transport and regional growth. Together, we are shaping a future that is inclusive, forward-thinking and rooted in the strengths of our city and the region.”

Mr O’Donnell, whose junior ministerial responsibilities cover the welfare of older people and housing, said: “I was delighted to attend the meeting of the Consultative Forum, which follows its inaugural gathering in City Hall, Limerick in March. Along with my ministerial colleagues, I engaged with the Mayor on a range of policy priorities that seek to enhance the growth and development of Limerick and the lives of its people.”

Mayor Moran made history back in June 2024 when he was elected as Limerick’s first ever executive mayor.

Limerick is the only city at present in the country to have a directly elected mayor.
