‘Help keep our streets safe’ this Christmas

Calls have been made for a permanent garda van in the city

A LIMERICK City Senator has called for a permanent Garda Community Engagement Van to be based in Limerick, insisting a visible Garda presence is essential for safer streets.

Fianna Fáil Senator Dee Ryan said that when the van was in place for a few weeks last year, there was a marked improvement in behaviour and the overall atmosphere in the city.

“Christmas is a special time for visitors and residents in Limerick city, and it is a very important time for our retail and hospitality traders. I want to encourage people to come into town this year, to shop... to enjoy the twinkling lights and magical atmosphere. That will only happen if people feel safe.”

Senator Ryan continued: “We have already seen the positive impact the Community Garda Van can have and I’d like to see it back in place this year to help keep our streets safe and our city vibrant.”

Senator Ryan has written to the Garda Commissioner requesting enhanced policing over Christmas. She has encouraged Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan to support the rollout of additional community development vans, including one that could be permanently stationed at Henry Street garda station.

“When he visited Limerick in the summer, I emphasised that Limerick must be a priority for deployment of Gardaí to offset the members who are retiring and to give us a net increase in Garda numbers to match our increasing population.

“In the meantime, we must put in place support immediately to improve our city for everyone who lives, works and shops here.”
