A CIVIC reception has been proposed for the recently retired Limerick hurler Declan Hannon.

A notice of motion was put forward by Fianna Fáil councillor Bridie Collins at the November meeting of the Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District.

Cllr Collins said a civic reception would be a “lovely honour” for Hannon, who would be a “well-deserved recipient”.

The motion was seconded by Fine Gael councillor Adam Teskey, who described Hannon as a “magnificent hurler” who played his part in a number of “fantastic victories” for the county.

The Adare native “championed Limerick hurling” and brought a “new vision for the sport for young and old”, Cllr Teskey added.

Some deliberation between members of the council executive followed as to how this reception would be facilitated and where it would be held.

The Cathaoirleach, Cllr Ger Ward, suggested that the civic reception be hosted by the full Limerick City and County Council, as opposed to just the municipal district.

Cllr Teskey then suggested that the reception be held in the Rathkeale House Hotel. However, his party colleague, Cllr Stephen Keary, opposed this idea, saying such an event would only cost the area money.

Eventually, it was decided that the municipal district would put forward a motion proposing the civic reception for Hannon at the next full meeting of Limerick City and County Council, which is due to take place on November 24.

Director of Planning Vincent Murray told the meeting it will be up to the Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery, to sign off on any proposal for a civic reception.

Hannon announced his retirement from inter-county hurling last month, having made his Limerick debut way back in 2010.

During that time, he reverted from the half-forward line to establish himself as one of the game's great number sixes.

Hannon went on to become the first player to ever captain a side to five All-Ireland titles.

The Adare man also won seven Munster titles and two Allianz League titles during his time in the green jersey.
