Limerick lights up with festive cheer as the city and county kicks off the Christmas season with dazzling parades, artisan markets, and street performances

A PROCESSION of light and community spirit will sweep through Limerick, heralding the start of a Christmas season filled with artisan markets, circus acts, carol singing, and winter fireworks.

The illuminated parade marking the official switching on of the city’s Christmas lights, led by LUXe Theatre Company will take place this Saturday at 7.30pm.

It will light the way from The Crescent to the Potato Market, starting a festive season packed with events and experiences across Limerick city and county. There will be a universal access area for sensory-friendly viewing.

Under the heartwarming theme ‘Together for Christmas in Limerick’, the city and county will enjoy enchanting markets, family-friendly experiences, vibrant street performances and cultural celebrations. Expect dazzling light displays, storytelling, carol singing, and even fireworks lighting up the winter sky in Rathkeale.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran said: “It is great to be able to unveil the exciting programme of events for Christmas in Limerick this year. This year will again be special and we are delivering with a light up procession event in the city to kick off the magic of the season this Saturday. This year’s theme, Together for Christmas in Limerick, reflects Limerick’s spirit of community and celebration.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery said: “It’s wonderful to see such a rich and diverse line-up of festive events across the city and county. From family-friendly activities to evening entertainment, there is something for everyone, and I’m excited for residents and visitors to experience it all.” Dr Pat Daly, Director General, Limerick City and County Council added: “I am excited to see Limerick light up with the festive spirit, creating a welcoming place to celebrate, come together and make lasting memories.”

At the Milk Market there will be festive markets under the iconic canopy with artisan food, crafts, music, and themed fairs (art, vinyl, antique) from December 5 to December 24. It includes Santa’s LEGO-style grotto upstairs.

In addition, on weekends in December, locals can expect to see stilt walkers, circus acts, juggling Jack Frost, and kids’ discos for festive street entertainment on Cruises Street in the city.

Limerick on Ice will return to Arthur's Quay Park from this Thursday to Sunday, January 4.

A Christmas Concert will take place on the Silver Stage at Bedford Row offering festive performances with music and entertainment on Sunday, December 21 from 1pm to 3pm.

In County Limerick, there is also plenty to see and do. A Christmas Market will be held in Rathkeale Town Square on Friday, December 5 from 11am with seasonal treats and handcrafted gifts. At 4.30pm, Santa and Mrs Claus switch on the lights at the Crib, followed by a fireworks display lighting up the night sky.

Festive revelers in Newcastle West will enjoy a four-day Christmas Market in the Community Centre from Saturday, December 20 to Tuesday, December 23 from 12pm to 8pm daily. The market will feature artisan crafts, food, family amusements, and live entertainment.

Moving east, discover unique gifts and festive décor in a charming 18th-century courtyard, with plenty of seasonal treats and cozy Christmas vibes at a Boutique Christmas Market at Rockbarton Garden Centre in Bruff. The market will be held on Sunday, December 7 from 11am.

Last but not least, an Artisan Christmas Market will take place at Ballyneety Golf Club on Sunday, November 30 from 3pm. There will be over 20 stalls with handcrafted gifts, food trucks, mulled wine, and mince pies. Santa and Mrs Claus will visit, plus live music from local choirs for added atmosphere.
