'We're overwhelmed': Tens of thousands pour in to aid Limerick boy’s battle with cancer

Brave: Talented young sports star Mason Corkery, aged 13, from Knockainey, has been diagnosed with cancer

OVER €75,000 has been raised in just a week for the family of a 13-year-old County Limerick boy diagnosed with cancer.

A GoFundMe page was set up for the family of Mason Corkery, Knockainey last week jointly by Knockainey Juvenile GAA and Knockainey Soccer Club committees.

Micheal Quinlan, one of the organising committee, said they hoped to raise €10,000 in 24 hours. Instead, the figure had surpassed over €50,000.

“We’re overwhelmed at the generosity and want to thank people who have donated,” said Mr Quinlan.

The committee was formed after the terrible news emerged that Mason had been diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

The sports clubs said on the GoFundMe page: "With this diagnosis comes many trips to and from Dublin where Mason is receiving his treatment in the oncology ward in Crumlin Hospital and also time away from work for his family so they can care for Mason.

"Mason's treatment has many side effects to him and there is a long hard battle ahead."

The talented son of Eddie and Caoimhe Corkery has three younger brothers (pictured below).

"In the weeks and months ahead we have come together and decided to organise this fundraiser for them. Mason has been involved with both our clubs since he was five years of age.

"He is a talented hurler, footballer and soccer player and he has said that he is really looking forward to getting back playing sports with his friends in both clubs.

The clubs’ joint appeal continues: "There is nothing like having the support of community behind you especially in times like this and we want to show Mason and his family just how much he is loved here in Knockainey and the surrounding areas.

“So we are asking everyone who can to please get behind us on this very worthy cause.”
