INVESTIGATIONS are ongoing following a major drugs seizure at Shannon Airport - just days before Christmas.

Revenue says 38kgs of herbal cannabis were located and seized by Customs officers during routine operations at the airport on Monday.

They say the drugs, which have an estimated street value of €760,000, were discovered in shipments which had originated in the United States of America.

A Revenue spokesperson says detector dogs Brody & Gus assisted Customs officers during the operation and that the cannabis was destined for addresses across the Mid-West and in the south of the country.

Gardai have been informed and the drugs will be subject to forensic examinations as part of the ongoing investigation.

No arrests have been made to date.

This week's seizure is the latest to be made at Shannon Airport this year and follows a number of recent seizures in passengers' luggage.
