Safety concerns over Limerick bridge prompt engineer assessment request

CONCERNS over the condition of Rankins Bridge in Kilfinane were raised at the December monthly meeting of the Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District, with calls for the structure to be formally assessed by an engineer.

Fine Gael councillor P.J. Carey requested confirmation on whether Rankins Bridge or the low bridge, had been inspected by an engineer and whether a report had been carried out to determine if restorative works are necessary.

Cllr Carey said the inspection was an important first step to establishing the current condition of the bridge and identifying whether recovery works are required.

“Rankins Bridge is an important piece of local infrastructure and is regularly used by residents,” he noted. “Given its age and design, it is crucial to ensure the bridge remains structurally sound and safe for continued use into the future.”

The official response, provided by Diarmuid Sheehy, Senior Executive Engineer, stated that the Municipal District Office has referred the inspection of Rankins Bridge to the Roads Central Services Team for review under the Bridge Rehabilitation Programme, and that this review will include an engineer’s inspection.

Cllr Carey explained that having the bridge assessed by an engineer would allow Limerick City and County Council to make an informed application for funding should any works be deemed necessary.Inclusion on the 2026 works programme would also allow adequate time for planning and budgeting.
