KILLINURE National School, with an enrolment of around 190 pupils a mile from the village of Boher, has received a cash injection to invest in new technology thanks to the RISE Community Fund.
Established by NBI Chairman, David McCourt, RISE has awarded over 160 cash grants across the country to rural organisations seeking to boost their digital ecosystems. The fund is further supported by corporate sponsors including KN Circet, KPMG, DreamDev Technologies, and TLI Group.
With an investment of €84m, over 22,000 homes, farms, businesses and schools in County Limerick are included in NBI’s rollout of the Government’s National Broadband Plan.
Liam Guiney, Principal at Killinure NS, and Jonathan Dervan, IT Co-Ordinator said: “Our school has ambitious targets for digital literacy education for all of our students, which is vital for the world we live in today and the future they will experience.
“Since the installation of the NBI fibre broadband connection, the children and teachers have access to reliable and fast network connectivity. They can experience the real benefits of digital technologies to enhance learning, teaching, and assessment,” added Mr Guiney.

David McCourt, Chairman of NBI and founder of RISE, explained why it means so much to give back to the community with grants: “We’re delighted to give a financial boost to Killinure NS, which is doing amazing work to provide young pupils with opportunities to learn new technologies and to capitalise on their new high-speed connectivity.”
Over 15,800 homes, businesses and farms in County Limerick can now order a high-speed fibre connection to the NBI network and take-up is already surpassing 50% in areas where it’s been available longest.
TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer at National Broadband Ireland, concluded: “We recognise that access to high-speed fibre broadband is a critical first step. We’re thrilled to support Killinure NS with this latest grant and support the work of their dedicated tech team to introduce new digital learning initiatives.”
