Man convicted for breaching wildlife act at his home in Limerick City

A MAN has been convicted and fined in Limerick City District Court for having five perching birds in a cage at his home. 

Adrian Hayes of Marion Place, Janesboro, Limerick City was prosecuted for a breach of Section 31 of the Wildlife Act.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service received a report from a member of the public about a number of birds at the man’s home. 

During the investigation, it was established that Mr Hayes had five wild goldfinches in a cage, three glue sticks concealed in a tube container, a holding box and a trap at his home. 

The case was taken by the National Parks and Wildlife Service of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, and prosecuted by barrister David McHugh BL and State solicitor Aileen Mawe. 

Mr Hayes entered a guilty plea in Limerick District Court on November 14, 2025 and Judge John King convicted him under Section 31 of the wildlife act. This makes it an offence for anyone to buy, sell or be in possession of a live perching bird. 

Mr Hayes was fined €500 and given three months to pay.
