GARDAI in Limerick have uncovered a gun in an open area outside houses in a Limerick estate.

A video of up to eight gardai - both plainclothes detectives and uniformed officers - making the firearm detection has been widely shared on social media.

Following a media query from Limerick Live, a garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí conducted a search of an open area near Island Road, Limerick city on Tuesday night, December 23 and recovered a suspected imitation firearm.”

It is not known if the weapon was buried or hidden in plain sight. The seized firearm is now subject to forensic and technical examination.

“Investigations are ongoing,” said a garda spokesperson.

One source said this was a good capture by gardai in the run-up to Christmas.

“It is a serious piece of kit and certainly looks the part. At least it’s off the streets now. Imagine if a child out playing with a new football or bicycle for Christmas found it...” said the source.
