Free Christmas tree recycling across Limerick throughout January

Households can drop real trees to civic amenity centres and pop-up sites as council promotes reuse and sustainability.

Free Christmas tree recycling across Limerick throughout January

LIMERICK City and County Council is reminding households that real Christmas trees can be recycled free of charge throughout January, supporting a more circular and sustainable start to the new year.

As families mark Nollaig na mBan on January 6 – the traditional day for taking down Christmas decorations – residents are encouraged to bring their real trees to any of the council’s civic amenity centres in Mungret, Kilmallock, Newcastle West, or Gortadroma Recycling Centre.

The free service is available for the full month of January. To improve accessibility, the Council has also announced two additional free drop-off locations, operating from 9.30am to 3pm, with a limit of one tree per person.

These will take place on Friday, January 9, at Watch House Cross Complex in Moyross, and Saturday, January 10, at Musgrave’s car park on Park Road, Rhebogue.

All collected trees will be shredded and reused as bark mulch for parks and green spaces across Limerick. The material will also contribute to the free compost and mulch available at selected civic amenity centres.

The Council is urging residents not to burn Christmas trees or dispose of them in landfill, highlighting fire risks, air pollution, and methane emissions. Recycling trees helps reduce waste and ensures valuable natural resources are reused locally.#Full opening hours are available on Limerick.ie
