Almost €900k funding boost for Limerick towns and villages under renewal scheme

Design work for the redevelopment of the former Post Office building in Croom has been funded under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme

LIMERICK City and County Council has welcomed an announcement by Minister Dara Calleary, Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, of almost €900,000 in funding for Limerick under the 2025 Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

Projects in Cappamore and Croom were approved for funding under the Project Development Measure, and projects in Athea and Adare were approved for funding under the Main Scheme.

Under the Project Development Measure, almost €100,000 has been allocated to help bring key projects to planning and design stage. Cappamore secured €49,815 to develop a fully designed plan for a large-scale multi-use community green space.

The funding will support site assessments, stakeholder engagement, detailed design work, planning preparation and cost planning.

Croom was awarded €50,000 to progress the design and planning of public realm improvements to the village’s central open area, known locally as the market square, alongside proposals for the redevelopment of the adjacent former post office building.

Athea received €495,884 for the redevelopment of a prominent village-centre building into a modern, energy-efficient community hub. The project will deliver meeting spaces, a workshop and fully accessible facilities, providing a base for local groups and supporting long-term, sustainable rural regeneration in west Limerick.

Adare was also awarded €300,000 for a public realm enhancement project focused on improving access for both the local community and visitors. The works are intended to make the village centre more inclusive and easier to navigate, while reinforcing its role as a key social and economic hub.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Patrick O’Donovan said: “This investment of almost €800,000 is a strong vote of confidence in Limerick’s towns and villages. These projects will make a real, practical difference by improving public spaces, strengthening community facilities and helping our town centres to thrive.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery added: “The projects supported under this year’s scheme in Cappamore, Croom, Athea and Adare will deliver long-term benefits, improving public spaces, community facilities and overall quality of life.
“I congratulate each community involved and look forward to seeing these plans progress.”

Director General, Dr Pat Daly, commented: “From early-stage design work to large-scale regeneration, these investments will help deliver tangible improvements for the people who live in, work in and visit these rural towns and villages.”
