Biodiversity scheme opens in 2026 to support landowners in creating wildlife habitats

LIMERICK landowners, community groups and organisations will once again have the opportunity to enhance biodiversity on their land in 2026 with the return of The Hare’s Corner initiative in the New Year.

Applications opened on January 1st, offering practical and accessible supports to help people create wildlife habitats while also contributing to climate action and personal wellbeing.

Inspired by the old farming term “The Hare’s Corner” a small, awkward section of a field traditionally left unfarmed and allowed to grow naturally, the initiative encourages participants to dedicate even modest areas of land to nature.

These spaces, though often overlooked, can play an important role in supporting wildlife, improving water quality and strengthening ecological connectivity across the landscape.

The project has already demonstrated strong impact both nationally and locally. During 2025, The Hare’s Corner supported the creation of more than 1,600 biodiversity habitats across Ireland.

In Limerick alone, 269 biodiversity actions were delivered i 2025, representing a significant investment in the county’s natural infrastructure and environmental resilience.

These actions included the planting of 70 mini-woodlands with 50 native trees such as oak, birch, hazel and holly, alongside rarer species including Burren pine.

The initiative also supported the establishment of 70 orchards, with five heritage apple trees planted in each location, helping to protect traditional Irish fruit.

In addition, 60 wildlife hedges were planted using native species, providing valuable corridors for birds, pollinators and small mammals.

Further measures included the creation of 18 wildlife ponds, as well as the development of 27 Plans for Water and 24 Plans for Nature.

These tailored plans offer landowners expert guidance on managing land in a way that enhances biodiversity while complementing existing land uses.

The 2026 programme is funded through the National Parks and Wildlife Service’s Local Biodiversity Action Fund, which provides 85 per cent of the funding, with the remaining 15 per cent contributed by Limerick City and County Council.

This partnership ensures strong local support and aligns both the National Biodiversity Action Plan and Limerick’s own biodiversity strategy.

Sinead McDonnell, Biodiversity Officer with Limerick City and County Council, said the initiative is a key action within the Limerick Biodiversity Action Plan 2025–2030.

She said it offers an excellent opportunity for landowners, charities with lands, Tidy Towns groups, community organisations and faith communities to make a tangible contribution to nature and climate action, noting that “even the smallest patch of land can add to the mosaic of nature habitats across the country.”

Applications for The Hare’s Corner 2026 close on January 18th.
