The funding grants range from €1,000 to €2,500 per school.

Some of the projects include €2,000 for raised beds for fruit and vegetable planting in Fedamore CNS, €2,500 for Knockadea NS for a project to rate school meals and tackle food waste and €2,500 for  an outdoor learning space including native trees and pollinator friendly shrubs in Scoil Naomh Mhuire.

Other projects to be funded include €2,500 for a river project in Coláiste Chiaráin, €2,500 for a fashion and recycling initiative in Coláiste Nano Nagle and €2,000 for an outdoor innovation and sustainability hub for Limerick ETSS.

Limerick TD and Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Niall Collins welcomed the funding for the 12 Limerick schools.

He said: “There are a wide range of ESD projects underway in Limerick's primary and post- primary schools and this funding will be a huge help to them.

“ESD projects are supported by Government because it is essential that young people have the opportunity to learn the skills needed to support, promote and take action for sustainable development.”

Mr Collins added that this will help schools to work on projects, which help students to learn about sustainable ways of life.

Some of the projects look at aspects of daily life such as food waste, fast fashion and growing your own produce with polytunnels and raised beds.

Mr  Collins said: “Schools are promoting sustainable development and empowering their students to take action.”

The schools being funded are; Fedamore CNS, Glenbrohane NS, Knocklong NS, Milford NS, Murroe NS, Scoil Naomh Mhuire, Scoil Pól, Castletroy College, Coláiste Chiaráin, Coláiste Íosaef, Coláiste Nano Nagle and Limerick ETSS.
