Starting line now in sight for new athletics centre in Limerick

A render of Dooneen Athletics Club’s proposed new premises, planning permission for which is set to be sought in the coming weeks

DOONEEN Athletics Club members have signalled their intention to seek planning permission to build their long-awaited new facility in Mungret.

A planning notice has been published which represents the first step for the club in securing permission to build on a five-acre patch of land opposite Mungret Community College.

The facility is set to comprise of an indoor running track, gymnasium, plus changing rooms.

But its progress depends on funding with the club buying land from council last year.

Chairperson Phil Roche said: “It’s a big step forward for us. What we are hoping for is a 300 metre track and an indoor training facility for all the athletic events like long jump, high jump, shot putt and hurdles.

The development is expected to include an outdoor running track, and astro turf pitches with fencing.

At present, Dooneen Athletics Club, which has 400 members, is dependent on hiring facilities to hold meets.

In the past, Crescent College Comprehensive, Bawnmore and University of Limerick have stepped in.

But this facility will give the club a permanent home.

Metropolitan district leader, Cllr Daniel Butler, who represents the Mungret area on the local authority welcomed the planning application.

“This is a hugely positive step for athletics and for the wider community. I was proud to support the sale of the land to Dooneen Athletics Club originally. The club continues to have my full support as this important development moves forward, and I look forward to seeing a first-class facility delivered for current and future generations,” he said.

Dooneen Athletics Club has athletes competing at all levels, including county, provincial, national and international.
