OVER €130 million has been allocated to projects in Limerick under the HSE’s 2026 Capital Plan.

The Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD, has today approved the publication of the Health Service Executive’s Building and Equipment Capital Plan for 2026. In 2026, the HSE plans to complete construction of a Surgical Hub for the Mid-West in Limerick, allocating €47,623,812 towards its completion.

The HSE will also progress the acquisition of a second site in close proximity to the existing Dooradoyle hospital site to extend the University Hospital Limerick campus over both sites to support the delivery of healthcare services under a single governance and shared resourcing mode. See below for full breakdown of funding for Limerick projects.

Minister of State at the Department of Justice and TD for Limerick County, Niall Collins, said: “The allocation of €136,081,945 in the HSE’s capital plan for projects in Limerick reflects the Government’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes for all in the Mid-West region. This is a welcome increase on last year’s €107.5 million investment."

“Last year I was pleased to see the completion of a number of capital projects, including the new 96-bed block at UHL, and I am pleased to see the increased level of investment in critical projects such as the new Surgical hub for the Mid-West and significant expansion to UHL, with €16,000,000 allocated to the construction of phase one of the second intended hospital block."

“Capital investment in healthcare ensures the best quality environments and treatment outcomes for people in our communities and what is needed is delivery of these projects in full.”

Fine Gael TD for Limerick City and Minister of State for Older People and Housing, Kieran O’Donnell stated:

“I welcome the approval by Government of the publication of the HSE Capital Plan for 2026. The Plan outlines over €136 million in capital healthcare expenditure for key projects across Limerick in 2026 and demonstrates Government’s commitment to enhancing health service facilities and ensuring better access to care for the people of Limerick and the region. It is significant that Limerick is receiving the second highest allocation of capital funding nationally, outside of Dublin, reflecting the importance of investing in our health services here."

Fine Gael Minister Patrick O’Donovan added: “The investments set out in the 2026 HSE Capital plan shows our commitment to improve Limerick’s health service facilities and ensure better access to care for our patients. Investing in our health service is important as our population grows, with many people living longer, healthier lives."

“Today’s announcement, including investment in University Hospital Limerick, University Maternity Hospital Limerick, St John’s Hospital Limerick, St Camillus Hospital Limerick, St Ita’s Hospital Newcastle West and Croom Orthopaedic Hospital is welcome news that will help bring healthcare services closer to home and better meet the needs of patients and families in our community.”

Commenting on the publication of the HSE Capital Plan, Minister Carroll MacNeill said:

“I’m pleased to approve the publication of the HSE Capital Plan for 2026. By increasing capacity and developing the necessary infrastructure we will enable greater provision of care in our hospitals and in our communities, we are advancing the Sláintecare vision to provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time.”

Senator Maria Byrne added: “The investments set out in the 2026 HSE Capital plan shows our commitment to improve Limerick’s health service facilities and ensure better access to care for our patients.  Investing in our health service is important as our population grows, with many people living longer, healthier lives."
