Local residents were concerned the €1bn project could spark a surge of traffic into Patrickswell village
AN ADDITIONAL road is to be built alongside Patrickswell as part of the M20 project in order to keep traffic out of the village, new plans have revealed.
It came after councillors raised fears that the new €1bn Limerick to Cork motorway may lead to a surge of vehicles into Patrickswell.
A route design of the M20 road - published last summer - sparked concerns among people in Patrickswell, given that access to the road will be restricted near the village.

It was intended that junction five (on the current M20) at Attyflin would have its access changed.
This would have meant drivers heading towards Attyflin, Killeen and their surrounds would have needed to exit the motorway at junction four and drive through the village.
Now, a link road is being planned between junction four and junction five, running parallel to Patrickswell.
The local link road will allow people to exit at junction four, west of Patrickswell near Limerick Racecourse, to proceed along the link road to get to Attyflin at junction five.
It will cut the traffic in Patrickswell village. Under what was previously planned, drivers would have to exit at junction four and travel through Patrickswell village.
Patrickswell-based Fine Gael councillor Dan McSweeney said: “This morning’s update will be very welcome news for many people living in Patrickswell, Crecora and the surrounding areas. From the outset, residents raised serious and valid concerns about elements of the design around junction five, and it was important that those voices were heard and taken on board.”
He praised the community for coming together, saying: “Their message was clear”.

"I want to commend the residents and community groups who worked tirelessly to make their views known. I also welcome the continued engagement I have had with the N/M20 project team over recent months to ensure the concerns of local people were properly represented and addressed,” Cllr McSweeney concluded.
Council has this Wednesday issued letters to landowners along the proposed route, and is to enter talks in the coming weeks.
