Meanwhile, An Garda Síochána's extensive Roads Policing Operation over Easter has concluded. It was in place from 7am on Thursday, April 2 until 7am this Tuesday morning, April 7 to ensure road safety during the bank holiday weekend.

“During this period, there were three fatalities on our roads, and five serious injury collisions.

“In excess of 175 drivers were detected for intoxicated driving and in excess of 4,000 drivers were detected for speeding during the operation,” said a garda spokesperson.

Fixed Charge Penalty Notices issued for other road offences during this period included in excess of 290 for using mobile phones and over 95 for no seatbelts.

“An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road.

“Drivers should continue to give driving their full attention, slow down and take extra care,” said a garda spokesperson.
