Man Down premieres at Backstage Theatre on February 23
Róisín Whelan Dance brings the much-awaited Man Down, a thought-provoking and highly theatrical narrative dance production that will premiere on Saturday, February 19 in VISUAL, Carlow, and on Wednesday, February 23, at Backstage Theatre, Longford.
Man Down is a gripping new dance theatre looking at the known and unknown.
Following an original score by Aoife Kavanagh, four exceptional dancers create the evocative whirlwind of one man’s internal world.
The physically charged choreography confronts us with our own past, successes and failures.
“The Covid-19 pandemic deeply impacted on our feelings, emotions and on our mental health and wellness.
“With more research into mental health, I learned that isolation was a contributing factor to many mental health diseases, feeling alone.
“Last year Carlow County Council actually commissioned a graphic artist to create large wall murals around the town on GAA pitches, barber shops and housing estate walls entitled ‘We need to talk about this’. From there my idea was born,” says Carlow-based choreo- grapher and VISUAL LAB Programme Artist Róisín Whelan.
Man Down is funded by The Arts Council of Ireland Project Award with additional support from: VISUAL Carlow, Backstage Theatre, Dance Ireland, Shawbrook, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, Carlow County Council, The Strollers Touring Network and The Dramaturgs' Network Ireland.
Man Down will come to the Backstage Theatre this Wednesday, February 23. Tickets can be purchased via www.backstage.ie or 0433347888.
