Longford wholesale firm to close after BWG Foods takeover

McCarricks Cash N Carry has been acquired by leading retail group BWG Foods

One of Longford's oldest and most successful wholesale providers is to close its doors next month after being snapped up by BWG Foods.

McCarrick Brothers Cash N Carry has been a permanent fixture on the local business sector for several decades.

In a statement to the Leader this week, the company said it would be ceasing trading from its Townspark headquarters next month with operations switching to a BWG run branch in Mullingar.

“I can confirm that the McCarrick Brothers Cash N Carry business was acquired by BWG in late 2022,” said Pat McCarrick.

“The old Cash n Carry premises will close in late February 2023 with the business operating from the modern Value Centre branch in Mullingar from that date.”

Mr McCarrick was, however, at pains to stress all of its existing staff had been offered new roles with BWG Foods at its base in Mullingar.

He also said the takeover was one which made economical and logistical sense.

“It will be very much business as usual from Mullingar as 95% of turnover is delivered. Arrangements are in place to deliver to the remaining 5% walk in trade from Mullingar.

“I believe BWG Foods are in a much stronger position to continue the service that McCarrick's provided long into the future without the risk of supply chain disruption which McCarrick's faced when operating alone.

“All of our staff have been offered new roles with BWG Foods in Mullingar and I am deeply thankful for their service, commitment and support while working for McCarricks.

Mr McCarrick, meanwhile, took time to heap praise on the “ wonderful support” which the business had received from its extensive and loyal customer base over the years.
