Longford’s hopes of preserving their Division 3 status in the Lidl Ladies National League were dealt a big blow at Emmet Park on Sunday as Sligo moved off the bottom of the table by recording their first win of the season.
Sligo . . . 0-20 Longford . . . 2-9
Following the heavy defeat against Down just seven days previously, Alan Mullen’s charges knew a victory was vital ahead of a decidedly difficult looking trip to Wexford in three weeks' time.
Longford got off to the best possible start thanks to a well worked goal just minutes in which involved neat interplay between Edel Sheehy and Kamille Burke before the latter played in Caoimhe Lohan to fire into an unguarded net.
Longford could, and possibly, should have been further ahead four minutes later when Clodagh Lohan’s right footed strike at goal was adjudged to have been foot blocked by a Sligo defender, causing referee Alan Hurson to award a penalty.
However, Grace Shannon’s sidefooted effort moments later was easily gathered in by Sligo goalkeeper Ellen Maguire, much to the frustration of a small, but vocal home support.
Longford ended up trailing by 0-10 to 1-5 at the break and despite a strong start to the second half which yielded a goal from Kamille Burke to put them ahead, Sligo got back on top to run out winners by a five points margin in the finish.
