ESB Networks’ meter upgrade programme to commence in county Longford

ESB Networks has been upgrading existing electricity meters across Ireland, as part of the National Smart Metering Programme.
Over 1.1 million homes, farms and businesses have a smart meter and ESB Networks are now upgrading electricity meters in county Longford.

The upgrade to smart meters brings many benefits to customers, the environment, and the economy, and is a key part of the Government’s Climate Action Plan.
The new meter is read automatically, and as a result, it provides more accurate bills, without the need for estimated or manual readings.

Customers will be able to view and download their electricity usage data once they set up an ESB Networks Online Account at www.esbnetworks.ie. This will give customers greater control over their consumption.

Having a smart meter does not mean customers are automatically assigned to a smart price plan. Customers remain on their existing plan with their current supplier.
Since February 2021 electricity supply companies have been able to offer smart price plans and services including time of use tariffs, to customers who have had a smart meter installed. Customers must opt into these smart services.

The rollout of smart meters is being carried out on an area-by-area basis and ESB Networks will be in contact with customers when their meter is due for installation.
The programme is being delivered in partnership with the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and electricity suppliers.
