North Longford village of Ballinamuck all set to host historic first ever St Patricks' Day Parade

A piece of history will be made this weekend when the north Longford village of Ballinamuck holds its inaugural St Patrick’s Day Parade.

The idea was borne out of an impromptu discussion local residents held a number of months ago and which has been the talk of the area ever since.

Chairperson Margaret Dillon said while the idea behind its creation may have been innocuous for the most part, preparations have been anything but as the clock winds down to this Friday’s end product.

“We were just sitting around having a chat,” she said.

“It wasn’t long after we had Santa Claus in (Johnny’s) Cottage which was a great success and we said ‘Why don’t we try to have a St Patrick’s Day Parade’.”

The suggestion is one which has quickly grown into a planned showcase that could easily match other local parades in Longford, Ballymahon and Lanesboro.

That’s partly down to what can only be described as a comprehensive array of enticing features which are aimed at establishing Ballinamuck as a leading St Patrick’s Day parade in its own right.

Young and lively four piece band 4 Degrees West, together with popular local duo Paul and Andre will offer plenty of on street entertainment to spectators.

A number of other familiar faces from the local music circuit will also be on hand while Irish dancing and even a jiving competition have been added to an action packed itinerary.

For the younger generation of spectators, there will be face painting along with an appearance by Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Hot food and refreshments will also be on hand throughout the course of the afternoon.

But that’s not all. Following the culmination of proceedings, Dillon's Bar will be the place to dance the night away to the inimitable sound of The Fuzzy Burgers.

It all gets underway at 4pm in what looks set to be a very welcome addition to the local St Patrick’s Day festivities.
