Rebecca Barry has emerged as this year’s winner of the County Longford Eason Spelling Bee Final that took place last Thursday.
Rebecca Barry, who is a pupil at Colehill National school, soared to the top following a tense competition in which she faced seven fellow spelling enthusiasts; Clodagh Kennedy (Melview NS), Erin Rumley (Lanesboro Primary School), Hazel McKiernan (Stonepark NS), Jan Dudek (St Mel's NS, Ardagh), Joseph Lawrence (Scoil Eimear NS), Mark Flood (Scoil Bhríde) and Oran Flanagan (St Teresa's NS, Killoe).
Rebecca will now go on to compete in the Leinster Provincial Spelling Bee in May.
Rebecca is an avid reader and loves playing Gaelic football. She is currently reading one of her favourite authors Catherin Rundle.
Celebrating its tenth year, the Eason Spelling Bee provides a fun, educational outlet for school kids, encouraging them to expand their vocabulary and develop their confidence.
As well as the prestigious title of Eason Spelling Bee 2023 Champion, the top Bee will also take home a collection of books for their school library, worth €7,500 as well as a personal collection of books worth €500.
